AnimalSave’s Low-Cost Spay/Neuter clinic began operating in March of 2008. About 2,000 animals are altered each year, greatly reducing the number of homeless animals in our community. The primary purpose for AnimalSave’s low-cost spay neuter clinic is to significantly reduce the number of homeless animals born in our community.  There are simply not enough good homes for these animals.  AnimalSave’s cat adoption facility, our foster homes and local shelters are overwhelmed with dogs and cats.  We need your help!

The low-cost fee helps lower-income pet owners, who do not have an alternative, be part of the solution by getting their pet spayed or neutered at a young age.  We want to use our limited financial and surgery resources to alter animals at a young age, before they have an opportunity to reproduce.  Otherwise, the cycle continues and we can’t catch up.

AnimalSave’s spay/neuter clinic is not a full-service clinic.  We do high-volume spay/neuter only and we are good at it.  The price we charge does not cover our cost.  We must fundraise, ask for donations and write grants to subsidize this service.  If you are able, we always accept donations.

Dogs and cats can reproduce at a surprising rate.  A female cat can come into heat and become pregnant as early as 5-6 months of age.  She can have three litters a year and come into heat while still nursing her current litter.  Over her lifetime, she can have over 100 kittens.  If those kittens are allowed to reproduce, the overpopulation crisis becomes clear.  And the solution is clear.

Be responsible - be part of the solution - not the problem.  Please spay and neuter your animals early.

We spay puppies and kittens at eight-weeks of age and at two pounds. We have very limited surgery appointments and book months out.  We want to make the most of our resources so will give priority to younger animals before they are old enough to reproduce.  Younger animals recover faster, have fewer surgical complications and focusing on them is our best chance of getting control of the overwhelming, overpopulation problem. The cost to you is also less.

We spay pregnant animals that have not been purposely allowed to breed.  The solution to more homeless animals is prevention and intervention. If we can prevent the birth of more animals than there are homes for, we are fulfilling our mission.  If you have a pregnant animal and you allow her to reproduce, we will not be able to extend our services to you for the mother or the offspring.  Doing so would not be consistent with our mission and purpose.  The cost to spay one pregnant female is far less than the mom and 12 puppies or 6 kittens.

We spay/neuter feral (wild) cats.  We work exclusively with a feral cat trapper.  If you have a feral cat on your property that you wish to have altered, before you have twenty or fifty or a hundred cats, we will connect you with that person.

We cannot meet everyone’s need.  If you are financially able, please contact your regular veterinarian and leave these limited resources to those who need them the most.  Because we have limited resources, we must limit the amount of assistance we can give to one household.  If your household has used our services in the past, please contact your regular veterinarian.  Appointments will be limited to no more than two cats or one dog.  Appointments are limited to Nevada County residents that can show proof they reside in the county.

If you obtained an unaltered animal from a rescue organization outside of Nevada County, please contact that rescue for help getting your pet altered.  Your pet should have been altered before being adopted out.  Unaltered animals brought in from outside our county, put an additional burden on our resources.

If you were financially able to purchase an animal from a breeder, Craig’s List or other source, please contact your regular veterinarian.  We do not support breeding of animals and we assume the cost to alter it was factored into your decision to purchase an animal, rather than adopting from a shelter. Reputable shelters and rescue organizations spay or neuter, vaccinate, de-worm, etc., before adopting them out.

Please be part of the solution to too many homeless animals.  Click here to see the fee schedule.
